A. There was/there were (thì quá khứ đơn)

Compare – So sánh:

There is/there are (present – hiện tại)There was/ there were (past – quá khứ)
There is nothing on TV tonight.
Tối nay không có gì trên TV.
We are staying at a very big hotel. There are 550 rooms.
Chúng tôi đang ở một khách sạn rất lớn. Nó có 550 căn phòng.
Is everything OK? Are there any problems?
Mọi thứ có ổn không? Có vấn đề gì không?
I’m hungry, but there isn’t anything to eat.
Tôi đang đói, nhưng không có gì để ăn.		There was nothing on TV last night.
Tối qua không có gì trên TV
We stayed at a very big hotel. There were 550 rooms.

B. There has been/there have been (present perfect – hiện tại hoàn thành)

Look! There has been an accident. (there’s been = there has been)

Nhìn kìa! Đã có một tai nạn.

This road is very dangerous. There have been many accidents.

Con đường rất nguy hiểm. Đã có rất nhiều tai nạn.

Compare there was (past) – So sánh với there was (quá khứ)

There was an accident last night.

(Not There has been an accident last night)

C. There will be (thì tương lai đơn)

Do you think there will be a lot of people at the party on Saturday?

Bạn có nghĩ sẽ có nhiều người ở bữa tiệc ngày Thứ Bảy không?

The manager of the company is leaving, so there will be a new manager soon.

Quản lý của công ty đang rời việc, vì vậy sẽ có quản lý mới sớm thôi.

I’m going away tomorrow. I’ll do my packing today because there won’t be time tomorrow.

Tôi sẽ rời đi vào ngày mai. Tôi sẽ đóng đồ hôm nay vì sẽ không có thời gian vào ngày mai.

Exercise 1: Look at the two pictures. Now the room is empty, but what was in the room last week? Choose from the box and write sentences with There was… or There were ….
