A couple of weeks ago, I got an invitation to a birthday party from a friend named Thơ. We’ve just known each other for a little while, but we have a lot in common that we’re gradually becoming closer. Her birthday was approaching, so she asked me to come over for a visit. Her place is not far away from mine, around 2km from the city center. She lives with her family in a four-storey house. The house has a yellow lick of paint from the outside, which reminds me of French architecture back in the colonial days.
So my first impression was that her family was sort of traditional and by the book. Entering the house, I was taken aback by the interior design. The house, from what I remember, was fully refurbished with all the mod cons, all of which were monitored automatically. On the first floor, there was a vast living room with many family pictures and colorful decorations. The atmosphere it gave off was rather formal that I guessed it must be the place where they often wine and dine guests to discuss business matters. On the second floor lay her parents’ room and a closet. Up another flight of stairs was her room on the third floor, which contrasted sharply with other rooms in the house. It had floral wallpaper and artistic posters of her favorite music bands.
Overall, Thơ’s house is a typical warm & cozy place to live, especially if you love a spacious living space. However, if I were offered the chance, I wouldn’t want to live here, as I find the prospect of living in a multi-storey house quite tiring. I felt a shiver, thinking about how many hours it would take me to climb and down the stairs cleaning the rooms every day. I would rather live in a small apartment with every room staying on the same floor. I’ve got a tightly packed schedule at work, and when I’m home, I just want to relax. Maybe ten to twenty years down the road, once I’m settled down with a family of my own, I might change my mind and want to climb the property ladder. Who knows?

Another pastime that visitors should try is crossing the street without using traffic lights. I understand that doing so is a little eccentric, but Vietnam has a culture of chaotic traffic.
Nonetheless, because it is highly dangerous, I urge that travelers do this under the supervision of a native. If you ask me if Hanoi is a good place to live, I’ll give you a long list of reasons. Sure, living costs are exorbitant, but amenities ranging from health care to entertainment are quick and convenient.
