Do you use headphones?
Well, I used to own a pair of headphones before earphones and earbuds dominate the market (chiếm lĩnh thị trường). The shift to the latter two started a few years ago, mostly owing to (là do) the portability, compactness and price that they offer. I can get a decent pair of earphones (một cặp tai nghe xịn xò) for a fraction of the price of headphones (với giá chỉ bằng một phần nhỏ của headphones), and I can pretty much carry it everywhere I go. But to be fair, headphones deliver better sound quality, so I may be tempted to (bị lôi kéo) switch back to them at some point. Who knows?
What type of headphones do you use?
When I was small, I used my headphones mostly for entertainment. And since my favourite pastime activity is listening to music, my headphones were the bass-enhancing (tăng âm trầm) and noise-cancelling (chống ồn) type, which was just perfect for enjoying music. Over the years, my love for music has stayed the same, but as I listen to music on-the-go (nghe nhạc khi đi đường) more often, I’ve got myself a pair of upmarket earphones (tai nghe hàng đầu thị trường). It is the equivalent of the headphones I got before, with the same noise cancelling and bass-enhancing features.
When would you use headphones?
As I said, a good pair of headphones or earphones are kind of an indispensable item (một đồ không thể thiếu) to enjoy good music. But apart from that, I would put them on when I need to concentrate on my study or a workout session. To reach my peak productivity (đạt năng suất cao nhất), I really need to concentrate on what I’m studying, and for that I could use some chill beats and the noise-cancelling feature (tính năng chống ồn) from my earphones. The latter does a great job at blocking all the surrounding noises in my university’s cafe, the place where I often study. The same goes for when I work out. Hitting my playlist on my earphones (nghe các bài hát trong danh sách nhạc bằng tai nghe) gives me an energy boost, which contributes to a productive workout session.

Talents are often defined as special inborn abilities (những khả năng đặc biệt bẩm sinh) that a person possesses, such as an outstanding memory or a gifted voice. They come in all shapes and sizes (muôn màu muôn vẻ), and I am convinced that each and everyone of us is talented in one way or another (theo cách này hay cách khác).
I myself was born with a great sense of smell (khứu giác tuyệt vời). I am always the first one in the room who can tell if there are any changes in smell everywhere I go, no matter how subtle the change is. And together with the acute sense (giác quan nhạy bén) comes a good ability to memorize smell. Once I register a new scent in my mind, it doesn’t go away for months. It’s not always natural to me though. I didn’t know that my nose was keener than others at first, but gradually it dawned on me (tôi dần dần nhận ra nó).
This gift has done wonders for (có tác động tích cực lên) my life. For one, I can distinguish different scents more clearly, and foods seem to taste thousands of times better. Having my eyes closed while chewing slowly, I can immerse myself in the earthy smell of cumin, the fresh scent of chives, or the tanginess of citrus. Every scent is vibrant in its own way, and they all have a part to play in making a dish desirable. This ability to tell one scent from another makes visits to different restaurants worthwhile to me, as each has a unique combination of flavours and smells, which someone without a keen sense wouldn’t be able to fully appreciate.
But as delightful as the idea is, there are times (when) I want to recreate those dishes at home. Making an edible dish is one thing, but finding a recipe that satisfies my taste bud is entirely another (hoàn toàn là chuyện khác). And for that to be possible, I need to keep working on my sense of smell (tôi cần tiếp tục trau dồi khứu giác của mình). I started off by trying to remember the scent of different ingredients separately and categorizing them. At the same time, I zeroed in on (tập trung hoàn toàn) every dish and sauce that I ate, trying to name each seasoning that was put in and asking for the recipe. Gradually, as my sense of smell was sharpened, my cooking skill picked up (cải thiện) as well. The process has taken quite some doing, but now I can say with confidence that I can make pretty much any dish that satisfies the most difficult of taste buds.

Do you think artists with talents should focus on their talents only?
Not really. Talents are gifts of nature given to special individuals, so it is essential that artists endowed with talents (có tài năng bẩm sinh) should invest lots of time and hard-work to realize the full extent of their talents (toàn bộ tài năng). But to say that one can succeed with just talent alone would be a misstatement, as characteristics and interpersonal skills (kỹ năng đối nhân xử thế) have become a prerequisite (điều kiện tiên quyết) in today’s world. It is difficult for an arrogant, bad-tempered and socially-awkward person to be successful, no matter how talented they are.
Is it possible for us to know whether young children will become musicians or painters when they grow up?
I think it’s hard to predict a child’s future career prospects. It takes both hard-work and passion to become professional musicians or painters, but the problem is that it is next to impossible (gần như không thể) to tell if children have what it takes from an early age.
Therefore, it is our job as adults to encourage children to try their hands at (bắt tay vào việc gì) as many different artistic/arts and culture activities as possible, such as taking painting or dancing classes, picking up a musical instrument or going to the theater. In fact, lots of musicians discovered their passions for the subject from an instrument class they took early on. Once the kid’s talent is recognized, it is essential to offer suitable training and environment to sharpen their skills (mài dũa kỹ năng của họ). But we can only do so much, and only time could tell whether children have the perseverance (sự kiên trì) to stick at it until their talents fully blossom.
Do you think it is more interesting to watch famous people’s or ordinary people’s shows?
This is something I’ve never considered before. It depends on the show itself rather than what/the type of show it is, I suppose. As for celebrities’ shows, there is a popular show from Korea featuring glamorous houses of celebrities from all industries, and it has attracted millions of viewers the world over.
On the other end of the spectrum, ordinary people’s shows like Vietnam’s Got Talent or The Voice have their own appeal (có sức thu hút riêng). These shows afford everyday people a chance to work hard and grow each day for a chance to showcase their talents. They are fun to watch and would appeal to the general public, I guess.
